FSB says the situation in northern Syria is tense due to the terrorism threat

The situation with the threat of terrorism in the north and northeast of Syria remains tense, and the militants are able to freely cross the Syrian-Iraqi border. Deputy Director of the FSB of the Russian Federation, Chief of Staff of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee of the Russian Federation Igor Sirotkin said this on Tuesday, speaking at the UN High-level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States.

The Deputy Director of the FSB noted that presently foreign terrorist fighters are very dangerous, as they use their combat experience fr om Syria and Iraq in other regions wh ere there is a weakening of statehood.

“First of all, we are talking about the African continent, primarily its western part. The territories of the Maghreb and the Sahel are turning into the epicenter of the Islamist terrorist threat: armed groups of terrorists are expanding their areas of influence, creating a real danger of the reincarnation of IS in the version of the “African Caliphate.”
